Za'atar - Middle Eastern spice mixture

Zaatar is an Arabic spice mix. You often eat it with Mediterranean salad, falafel, pita, and vegetables such as eggplant, chickpeas and tomato. Zaatar is not easily available everywhere, but luckily you can make it yourself in a few minutes with this zaatar recipe.

Sesame seeds black3 tbsp
Sumac2 tbsp
Dried thyme1 tbsp
Dried marjoram1 tbsp
Oregano1 tbsp
Basil1 tbsp

This is how you make it

  1. Rush the sesame seeds in a mortar. This Japanese mortar is super!
  2. Mix with the rest of the ingredients.
  3. Sprinkle over your salad or pita.

Tip(s)

  • Sumac is difficult to find in the organic shop. It is a tart berry that you can replace with dried lemon zest or ground barberry berries.
